In The News

2007, 2008, 2009
The Poverello Center has been voted “Missoula’s Best Nonprofit Organization” by readers of the Missoula Independent in the Annual Best of Missoula Awards .

“You probably know it by the blue house on Ryman Street, but the Poverello Center, the largest homeless center in the state, also encompasses the Valor House for veterans, the Joseph Residence for families and the Salcido drop-in center for the chronically homeless. In all, the Pov serves Missoula's poorest—about 300 per day—year round, without fail. That service includes food programs, case management, employment referrals, housing placement and an on-site health clinic. More than 50 employees help fulfill these services, as well as the efforts of 21,000 annual volunteer shifts. "In a way," says Executive Director Ellie Hill, "damn near everyone in Missoula has worked at the Pov at one time or another." The Poverello Center: 535 Ryman St; 728-1809; thepoverellocenter.org

2007, 2008, 2009
Ellie Hill, Executive Director of the Poverello Center has been voted “Missoula’s Best Activist” by readers of the Missoula Independent in the Annual Best of Missoula Awards .

The success of the state's largest homeless center, the Poverello Center, rests largely on the shoulders of Executive Director Ellie Hill. The former district attorney never expected to be in her current position, but she points out that the word "lawyer" translates to "advocate" in most other languages. Although she's kicked around the idea of leaving her current position for a more traditional legal career, it'll never happen. "I'm still a lawyer in a lot of ways," she says. "I consider myself an advocate for the poor."

2009
The Poverello Center finished in the top three “Best Places to Work” by readers of the Missoula Independent in the Annual Best of Missoula Awards.

2009
The Poverello Center was voted the “Best Place to Volunteer” by readers of the Missoulian newspaper in the Annual Missoula’s Choice Awards.

Ellie Hill, Executive Director, was named a Democracy for America, Netroots Nation Scholar.  The scholarship and recognition was awarded to thirty of the nation’s best activists for their efforts to educate the public, create awareness, and foster progressive community change.

Kevin Johnson, Volunteer Coordinator, was nominated as Missoula’s Best Employee, by members of the Missoula Downtown Association.
